THAILAND'S MEDICAL TOURISM PUSH GAINS SUPPORT, TIED TO GLOBAL SUMMITS IN BANGKOK
Health authorities are offering their full support to the government's plan to promote medical and wellness tourism, which is expected to help drive the economy.
Medical and wellness tourism involves traveling abroad for healthcare or treatments, and this sector has significant growth potential. The government’s plan to position Thailand as a medical hub by 2030 aligns with this trend, said Akom Praditsuwan, director-general of the Department of Health Service Support.
“The government initiated a plan to build a medical hub in the 13th National Economic and Social Development Plan, which expects medical tourism to contribute 1.7% of GDP,” he said, adding that the current plan covers 2023 to 2027.
Dr. Akom stated that medical and wellness services previously attracted 1.2 million foreign visitors to Thailand, with the number recently increasing to 3.4 million visitors.
Spas and wellness centers remain a popular attraction for both tourists and locals, recording 40 million visits in 2018.
He was speaking at a briefing detailing plans to organize four major events in 2025:
-
Top Wellness Global Summit 2025 (October 21-24)
-
Global Economic Forum 2025 (October 22)
-
Global Sustainable Energy Forum 2025 (October 23)
-
Global Investment Forum 2025 (October 24)
The Top Wellness Global Summit (TWGS) 2025 will provide updates on healthcare innovations, anti-aging medicine, beauty and aesthetics, and the relationship between mind and body. All four events are scheduled to take place from October 21-24, 2025, in Bangkok, Thailand.
Eurblarp Sriphiromya, executive director of the Tourism Products Department, said he expects TWGS to boost medical and wellness tourism services and products in Thailand.
“The TWGS will pave the way for supporting the local economy and villagers producing and selling herbal products,” he said.
The government estimates the value of medical tourism products at US$34.6 billion annually.
Bernice Jenvdhanaken, business development manager for the Polish Investment and Trade Agency, emphasized that these four events will be crucial platforms for collaboration and discussions on global wellness, economic growth, and sustainable energy, with Poland eager to participate in these important initiatives.
